Mr. Bashir's interest in fine oriental carpets first stemmed from an old family tradition, starting with his grandfather who traded in carpets among other things,From these simple childhood roots he has gone on to conduct one of Montreal's better known carpet businesses, now known as Bashir Persian Rugs or in french as Tapis d'Orient Bashir Ltée., where he sells hundreds of luxurious hand-made silk and wool oriental carpets imported from all over the world.

But Mr. Bashir's interest in carpets is more than merely professional. He really takes a personal interest in his customer's carpets, and is genuinly concerned that they are pleased with their buy. In Mr.Bashir words, What's important is that you really like and feel comfortable with the carpet you have purchased. Our only goal is to give the widest possible selection at the lowest possible price. We allow our customers to try their carpets at home first, to make sure they are satisfied. We also provide home delivery and will install a carpet's underpadding if necessary. His company also provides a full year guarantee, so customers may return carpets within a year, should they not be satisfied, or should they wish to ward off what Bashir humorously terms Buyers Remorse.

Mr. Bashir carries the most beautiful and the extensive selection of hand-knotted persian and oriental carpets in Montreal. Throughout the year, he typically travels to countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, the former Soviet Union, and Morocco. Some of the sumptuous persian rugs he imports include those such as Qum made of 100 % silk, Isfahans, Heriz, Serapi, Nain, Bakhtiar, Hamadan, Tabriz, Kashan, and many more. At Bashir Persian Rugs there is something for everyone. Many of the rugs he imports are one of a kind, and include beautiful Bokharas, delicate pastels and a wide array of traditional contemporary designs. Mr. Bashir's company currently carries the most beautiful and largest selection of pakistani rugs in Canada.

With over 30 years experience in the industry, Bashir knows something about carpets--he has virtually been involved with every aspect of carpets all his life. As a young boy he came to meet a german doctor who had a carpet business in Munich. During the course of a business transaction, Bashir decided to travel to Germany and went to work in his warehouse, where he gradually learned about the various aspects of the business. He later went to Libya for a year and a half, where he successfully managed a flourishing business trading carpets at the same time. He also spent time in Switzerland, Austria, and Italy.

After his travels, Mr.Bashir returned to Canada with a dream--he wanted to open his own showroom. He eventually moved to Montreal where he decided to open a store on Queen Mary Road, in 1978, which became known as Galerie de la Carpeterie Oriental, and successfully began to sell fine hand-knotted silk and wool rugs. Mr. Bashir then went on to open another oriental carpet store, along with a partner, called Kaghan Oriental Carpets on Côte-des-Neiges road in 1982 for three more years. From 1985 to 1991, he ran another showroom known as Shuja Bashir Company at Place Bonaventure. Since October 1991, he manages and operates his current business at his present location.

Bashir continues to share his love affair with carpets with anyone who is interested. He currently conducts seminars where he gives a brief history of carpets, and teaches how to differentiate between carpets, what to look for when buying a carpet, how to go about buying a quality carpet, and also how to keep your carpet in the best shape. He also offers potential buyers advice on how to mix furniture with appropriate style of oriental rug.

Seminars are generally held at Bashir Persian Rugs Ltd. at 8461 boul. Decarie on the first Thursday of every month except for July and January, when Bashir is usually travelling out of the country in pursuit of ever more exotic carpets. He says he wishes to share knowledge which is literally the result of a lifetime of international experience in the business. Customers come from all over the world to seek out Shuja Bashir's exquisite oriental carpets, in-depth experience, and warm professional manner. When asked whether he's ever come across a flying carpet throughout the course of his numerous travels, Shuja shrugs with a twinkle in his eye, and says Not yet. But you never know. My customers will be the first to know.
